This site was created to let our friends and family follow along on our journey. It’s also our place to document our adventure for our own memories to look back on later. And if you happen to be here because you are considering taking a leap to a life on the water and cruising or voyaging, we hope what we are sharing will be beneficial to you in some way. We learned a lot that helped us immensely from other people living the cruising lifestyle and sharing their knowledge online, and we hope this blog will be a place where we can help give back to the sailing community with bits of useful information we learn as we go.
We are an adventure-seeking, travel-loving couple currently exploring the world on SV Coronado, our 45’ Lagoon 450S catamaran. We met in college and spent all of our first 25 years together raising three amazing kids, while also somehow managing to both build big careers. We will write a separate post about how this big adventure of voyaging on a boat got started in 2015, but the short story is that we love all of the experiences of travel: trying new food, experiencing different cultures, and meeting more of the fascinating people that inhabit planet Earth. We also find our hearts are happiest when we are on the water. This combination makes exploring the world via boat pretty amazing!
John is Captain of SV Coronado. In addition to being the fearless leader of our fine boat, he is our head mechanic, weather router, technical guru, and the one you can count on to be calm in emergencies (thanks in part to a few years spent working as an EMT). He is passionate about just about everything outdoors, he has MacGuyver troubleshooting skills with most mechanical things, and he loves a good challenge. John was previously a successful software engineer and retired in 2022 as an analytics executive. He is now a registered US Coast Guard Captain, and if he wasn’t sailing around the world and finding great places to scuba dive, you would find him mountain biking or snowboarding – his other two favorite places to be.
Anna is Her Royal Majesty (HRM) aboard SV Coronado. She is also Chief Communications Officer for the boat, an outstanding navigator, and loves doing solo night watches. Anna was previously a Corporate Communications and PR executive, but her real passion has always been nature and the ocean. She is a true water witch, and in addition to being able to tell you when the moon will be full and how close we are to the Summer Solstice, she can now be found playing as a mermaid underwater, writing, painting, staring at clouds, listening to piano music, and seeking out as many simple pleasures as she can find in each day. She is excited to be “indefinitely out of the office”, and would like to warn everyone that now that she is only writing for pleasure, you can expect to see some typos and curse words. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
Our personal mission is this: we believe in collecting moments and experiences, not things. We do what we can to stay in awe of mother nature and the amazing world around us. We are a speck in this great, big, glorious universe, and we are doing our very best to make the most of the time we have here.
